black medick is also one of several plants called "hop clover," from which lesser hop clover derives its name. its yellow clover-like flowers are indeed much larger! it is also called "nonesuch," which i enjoy quite a bit as a name for something.
this plant was and is generally planted in pastures for livestock grazing, so it is enjoyed by animals for that purpose and holds up well to getting chomped on. black medic is drought-tolerant and grows well in poor quality soil; like some other weeds, it usually colonizes empty spaces of poor quality. it also helps to enrich soil it's planted in! it will grow in lawns, but it seems like usually it will only do so if the lawn's soil is particularly poor and dry. (although some sources call it "aggressive" and/or "invasive")

black medic blooms all summer.
