cinquefoil (dwarf & common)

dwarf cinquefoil (Potentilla canadensis) & common cinquefoil (Potentilla simplex)
native, weed
photos taken mid-may

i've had some difficulty figuring out what the difference is between dwarf & common cinquefoil besides common being generally a bit bigger, but i am reasonably sure now that the somewhat broader leafed variety (left) is dwarf cinquefoil, and the somewhat narrower-leafed (right) is common. common cinquefoil is a bit more widespread. there don't appear to be many differences between the two, though.
these cinquefoils are interesting to look at, growing tangled amidst grass and having long sections of stem creeping all over the place. they prefer quite a bit of sun and dry soil and open areas like fields. their flowers seem fragile - the petals fell off several when i accidentally nudged the plants - and are enjoyed by small pollinators like flies and small species of bees.

these plants flower from april to june.
