evening primrose

common evening primrose (Oenothera biennis)
native weed
photos taken in september

this bold conspicuous plant doesn't really look prim or much like a rose! in its first year it's a low-lying rosette of leaves, and in its second year it throws up thick tall flower-bearing stems. up to six feet tall, maybe a bit taller even! they branch out a bit and give it a shrublike appearance, and get to be a bit brownish and woody as they age, which probably inspired one of its common names - "tree primrose".

it has simple yellow flowers which open towards the end of the day and into the evening, (which nighttime moths are apparently attracted to!), hence the "evening" in its name. it's got biggish seedpods (third photo!) that stay on the stems throughout winter. the seed pods are thicker and harder to open than some other seed pods i've fiddled with!

evening primrose is in bloom from late july through september.
