oldfield-toadflax

oldfield-toadflax (Nuttallanthus canadensis)
native
photos taken in june

the patch i found is just down the road, spread out over an odd little patch of grass in the middle of the road. it photographed terribly (left) because this toadflax is small and spindly, but i actually gasped aloud when i saw it! it's very dreamy-looking. i love its soft purple color.
this delicate native flower prefers particularly disturbed areas, with dry sandy and rocky soil. it thrives by the side of the road, as well as the old fields of its name. its leaves and nectar are food sources for common buckeye larvae, caterpillars, and butterflies. probably some other ones as well, but that's the one i've seen referenced.

oldfield-toadflax blooms through the summer; every source i've seen lists a slightly different date range, so it probably depends on the climate..
