red clover (Trifolium pratense)
non-native
picture taken in june
like white clover, red clover is a naturalized & very common non-native plant! it's popular for its ability to help rejuvenate soil via nitrogen fixing, its use as a grazing crop, and the fact that bees like it!
unlike white clover, red clover is big! the flowers are big and the plant is big. it's short-lived and doesn't spread as groundcover like white clover does, instead forming tangled clumps. the stems tend to look leggy and messy and flop all over the place rather than staying upright. (not a very elegant plant.)
fun fact: red clover is the state flower of vermont!
red clover blooms from may through october.
