northern red oak

i'll level with you that i don't know for sure this is a northern red oak; it could be a different type of oak tree, like Quercus coccinea (scarlet oak) or Quercus velutina (black oak). i am not very good with trees! but rubra is supposed to be most common and the bark reference pictures on gobotany look the closest, so that's what i'm going with.

anyway... the northern red oak is native to the eastern half of the continent! it's an oak tree. it drops acorns. its wood is good for use in furniture and floors and such. it's one of the most common trees in new england! lots of animals make their homes in them; squirrels, raccoons, chipmunks, et cetera.
