also called narrowleaf plantain, english plantain, and buckhorn plantain, this weed loves sandy & dry soil and is often found in lawns as well as waste areas. it needs full sun to grow and won't be found anywhere even partly shady.
the leaves are a favorite of rabbits, apparently. it appears pretty much everywhere in the us and seems to largely stick to lawns and waste areas where nothing else grows, but it is considered a noxious weed and/or invasive in a few states. perhaps it has different growing habits there than it does in massachusetts? ribwort plantain can certainly take over a lawn.
