rugel's plantain

rugel's plantain (Plantago rugelii)
native, weed
picture taken in early may.

this common lawn weed can be distinguished from the also-common and very similar (non-native) plantago major by the reddish tint at the bottom of its stems! it is named after a botanist named ferdinand rugel, who i couldn't find much information about via googling.
rugel's plantain grows in waste areas and tolerates most light & soil conditions. it's much enjoyed by wildlife, especially insects - there's even a species of beetle that specifically eats plantains! the northern plantain flea beetle. like many leafy plants, it can be eaten by humans as well; its leaves get tough and stringy as they age, though, so if you want to eat em you should eat them when they're young.
