tatarian honeysuckle

tatarian honeysuckle (Lonicera tatarica)
invasive
photos taken in june

this shrub was imported for ornamental purposes and became invasive! it is extremely difficult to kill; this one has been visibly cut down entirely multiple times, and was huge and prosperous nonetheless. this one is teaming up with some very old bittersweet to throttle a mulberry tree; i don't have any pictures of the full shrub because i got excited and started chopping it down.
invasive honeysuckles (of which there are several varieties in massachusetts!), interestingly, all have hollow branches! as i've spent quite a bit of time snipping and chopping this one, i can also tell you that the wood (especially the younger branches) has a lovely sweet smell when cut. the wood is also quite soft.

tatarian honeysuckle only blooms in late may.
